El Arco de Cabo San Lucas
One of the most stunning sights to see in Cabo San Lucas is El Arco, a striking natural rock formation located at Land’s End where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. This distinctive rock has formed due to tremendous waves crashing against the rock wall for thousands of years. Humble Beginnings
Despite the name given to the Sea of Cortez, Cabo San Lucas as actually discovered by Francisco de Ulloa, navigator to Herman Cortez, in 1537. The tropical locale quickly became a trading post and pirate stop-over where British and Dutch ships often ransacked Spanish ships returning to Spain stocked with treasures. In 1587, King Phillip II of Spain built a small fortress in Cabo San Lucas to deter the pirates after the Spanish treasure ship “Great St. Anne” was captured there.
Once the Spanish fort was established tiny settlements began to appear, spurred by the discovery of pearls in the Sea of Cortez. A Jesuit mission known as Jose del Cabo (now known as San Jose del Cabo) was founded just north of Cabo San Lucas in 1730 and together the two towns became Los Cabos (“The Capes”). The settlements in Cabo San Lucas remained very small because early on the area lacked a steady supply of fresh water.
Commercial Development
Commercial development in Cabo San Lucas began in 1917 when a group of Americans built a floating platform to catch tuna and later founded Compañia de Productos Marinos S.A. The tuna plant was in operation for many years, and was a turning point in Cabo history, as the area became known as a major fishing haven in the 1930s.
An Iconic Setting
After World War II, rumors spread in the U.S. that Los Cabos was a hidden gem among the rich and famous. By 1950, famous stars like Bing Crosby, Desi Arnaz, and John Wayne were becoming frequent visitors to the area, and luxury hotels and restaurants sprung up to meet the needs of Cabo’s new high-class clientele.
A New Road Map
In 1974 the Mexican government created a new infrastructure to transform Los Cabos into a bustling tourist center, which included completion the Transpeninsular Highway. The highway (also known as Mexican Federal Highway No. 1) runs the entire length of the Baja California Peninsula from Cabo San Lucas to Tiajuana, and made Cabo San Lucas more accessible; before the highway the area could only be reached by dirt roads, long range yachts, and small planes. Construction of the international airport, a modern marina, and fresh water pipelines have all led to Cabo’s current growth and development.
